Well – having just logged online a few minutes ago – only to find that there is yet another rogue anti-spyware out to get its hands on my hard-earned cash!

Cyber Security is the latest in scams! Pretending to be a spyware remover, this application has one primary objective: to scare its victims into purchasing its licensed version.

Cyber Security, also referred to as: CyberSecurity, doesn’t deviate much from the typical and most widely practiced tactics of PC parasite infiltration.

Cyber Security tends to use affiliated backdoor Trojans, usually Trojan Vundo or Zlob, in order to ensure hidden penetration into the targeted machine is successful.

Once inside the designated system, Cyber Security will obscurely create hundreds of fake malware entities in the infiltrated system.

How to download files safely, without putting your computer at risk!CBP_2_by_geekiest

The Internet is a haven of vast and immense information and software, all of which can easily be obtained by simply downloading it onto your computer.

However, even though downloading files from the Internet have many advantages, there are just as many disadvantages. Before downloading any file to your computer, you should be aware of a few things – knowledge of which will only help you keep your computer safe from any virus threats.

First things first – look at the file size of the file that you want to download. For example, should you want to download freeware software from a web site and you know that the software file size should be around 12 or 13 MB, but upon closer inspection you see that the file size is 234 KB. This should sound off warning bells in your mind, as it is highly likely that this file size is in fact a virus or Trojan, due to the simple fact that the file size was just not right.

MicroSoft Corp has warned users of Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) that attackers are actively using a critical bug in the browser, and to take countermeasures in lieu of a patch. Users running IE7 in Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 are at risk.

Three things IE7 users can do to protect themselves:

1. Set”Internet”and “Local Internet” security zones to “high”. Users must select “Internet Options” from Tools menu, click the Security tab, click on “Internet”, then move the slider to “High” setting. Repeat for “Local Internet”. Click OK.

2. Disable Active Scripting. Choose “Internet Options” from Tools menu, click the Security tab, click “Internet” icon and then the “Custom level” button. In the ensuing dialog, under the “Scripting” section, in the “Active scripting” item, click “Disable”, then OK.

If you were a mega-star and well accustomed to hundreds of fans and groupies chanting your name, vying for your attention and million-dollar autograph – would you feel entitled and justified enough to insist that certain outrageous and sometimes outright bizarre requests be met?

Well, you might not, but there certainly are a few celebs that think they are entitled extra special treatment, often they liken themselves to a demi-god status and expect to be treated as such.

Technical news for all you techies…

Annoyance for ConsumersBeauty_by_zhanglu

Malicious software is becoming tougher to remove because more virus writers are including components that conceal the malicious files deeper within the operating system. Most of these intruders cannot easily be removed without re-installing the operating system.

A virus infection is the basis to rebuilding the infected machine with a known safe copy of Windows and any other needed applications. Alot of today‘s infections are extremely hard for the average user to remove completely.

An increasing reliance on generic detection also has made it more difficult for consumers to find instructions on-line for eliminating an infection that can‘t be completely eradicated by anti-virus software.

Swatting – the new age hackers favourite past-time
dopeness_by_azuil
A new kind of telephone fraud has recently emerged and is taking on a rapidly increasing role in many a teen hacker’s daily plots. It is called: Swatting. What Swatting entails is exploiting a weakness in the way the 911 system handles calls from Internet-based phone services.

These attacks are called “swatting” because armed police SWAT teams usually respond to these online threats. Swatting seems to be virtually unstoppable, and an Associated Press investigation found that budget-strapped 911 centres are essentially defenceless, unless they go through a complete overhaul of their computer systems.

By entering bogus information about their location, the hacker is able to make it seem to the 911 operator as if they are calling from inside the ‘targets’ home. According to prosecutors familiar with this new style of hacking, perpetrators tend to pick targets at random.

Last March, a teenage hacker was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to five felony counts, including computer access and fraud, false imprisonment by violence and falsely reporting a crime.

Cyber crime and how these criminals keep reinventing their methods of attack…Dopeness_by_thecrossing

Cyber crime is being propagated by the fact that cybercriminals are leveraging new technologies, as well as reinventing social engineering forms, so as to coerce and entrap consumers.

Due to this very fact, the last six months has seen an increase in Web threats, and a steady decrease in Adware and Spyware, as a combating force, as these types have outdated technical methods, and cannot compete with the high-level security of the newer malware.

Phishing techniques
While Nigerian phishing scam and the Spanish prisoner scam have been around for quite some time now, cybercriminals are continually refreshing and modernizing this standard form of trickery. A recent example, according to Trend Micro (a global leader in Internet content security), “a new form of phishing warned potential victims about phishing emails as a way to legitimize that email and then tricked them into clicking on a link that leads to a fraudulent site”.
